Breed standards describe the ideal show dog, not a health target. A dog outside its standard can be perfectly healthy; body condition is the better guide.

How to use the breed weight chart

Every recognized breed has a written standard that describes the ideal dog for judging, including its size. Our chart takes the weight and height ranges from the American Kennel Club's breed pages, separately for males and females. Height is measured at the withers, the top of the shoulder blades. Where the AKC gives only a single figure or a minimum, the range was widened using the breed standard, and breeds outside the AKC use another kennel club's standard.

Choose a breed in the checker above and add your dog's weight to see where it falls. The size class follows the scale used across our tools; the dog size chart explains it and how other size schemes differ.

Breed standard vs your dog's ideal weight

A breed standard is a target for the show ring, and real dogs spread well beyond it. In the growth records of healthy purebred dogs we analysed for our puppy tools (US vet clinics, dogs in normal body condition at 2 to 3 years), 8 in 10 adults weighed between about 78% and 124% of their breed's typical weight. A healthy dog can sit well outside its breed's published range simply because of its frame.

So use the chart as a sanity check, not a verdict. If your dog is outside the range, look at its body condition: ribs you can feel easily under a thin layer of fat, a waist from above and a tucked belly from the side mean a healthy weight for that dog. Vets score this on a 9-point scale, and our body condition score checker and ideal weight calculator turn it into a target weight.

Why males and females have different ranges

Of the 162 breeds in this chart, 82 have separate weight ranges for males and females, and in 82 of those the males are heavier: the middle of the male range is typically about 18% above the middle of the female range. The other 80 breeds give a single range for both sexes. Compare your dog with the range for its own sex.

What about mixed breeds?

Mixed breeds and designer crosses have no standard. If you know the parents, their adult weights are a useful clue, and our mixed breed size calculator turns two parent breeds or weights into a likely range. For a puppy, the puppy weight calculator works from its own weight and age, which beats any breed guess. For an adult mixed breed, body condition is the only reliable yardstick.

Frequently asked questions

How much should my dog weigh?

The breed standard gives a starting range, but the right weight for your dog depends on its frame. The best test is its body condition: ribs easy to feel under a thin layer of fat and a visible waist. Our ideal weight calculator turns your dog's weight and body condition score into a target.

Where do these breed weights come from?

From the American Kennel Club's breed pages, which follow each breed's official standard. Breeds the AKC does not recognize use another kennel club's or breed club's standard, and designer crosses such as doodles have no standard, so their ranges are estimates.

My dog weighs more than its breed standard. Is it overweight?

Not necessarily. Many pet dogs are bigger or smaller than the show standard and perfectly lean. Check the ribs, waist and belly tuck with our body condition score checker; if the score is 6 or more, your dog is carrying extra fat whatever the standard says.

How do I measure my dog's height?

Breed standards measure height at the withers, the highest point of the shoulder blades. Stand your dog square on a level floor, lay a ruler or book flat across the shoulders, and measure from the floor to the underside of it.

When does a puppy reach its adult weight?

Small breeds are close to adult weight at about a year, while large and giant breeds keep growing for up to two years. Our puppy weight calculator estimates your puppy's adult weight from its current weight and age.
