Times per year follow AAHA, CAPC and American Heartworm Society schedules for a adult dog. 1 DAPP every 3 years counts as 0.33 a year. Edit any number to match your vet's plan.
The prices pre-filled in the calculator are examples, not survey data. Ask your clinic for its fees, and follow your vet's plan where it differs from these general schedules.
How the vet cost calculator works
A vet budget is mostly a schedule: the same exams, vaccines, tests and preventives come round at predictable intervals. The calculator fills in those intervals from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) and the American Heartworm Society. What it can't know is what your clinic charges, so every price is yours to set. The numbers you see first are round placeholders, clearly marked, to show how the sums work.
Yearly budget = Σ (times per year × price each)
A vaccine given every 3 years counts as a third of a dose per year, so the yearly figure spreads its cost evenly. Switch on the lifestyle vaccines that fit your dog, and edit any quantity your vet does differently.
How often does a dog need each vet service?
These are the times per year the calculator starts with:
| Service | Puppy, year 1 | Adult | Senior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exam or wellness visit | 4 | 1 | 2 |
| DAPP vaccine | 4 | 0.33 | 0.33 |
| Leptospirosis vaccine | 2 | 1 | 1 |
| Rabies vaccine | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Bordetella (kennel cough) (if needed) | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Canine influenza (if needed) | 2 | 1 | 1 |
| Lyme vaccine (if needed) | 2 | 1 | 1 |
| Fecal parasite test | 4 | 2 | 2 |
| Heartworm test | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Tick-borne disease test | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| Blood tests (CBC and chemistry) | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| Urinalysis | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| Blood pressure and thyroid (T4) | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| Heartworm and worm preventive (months) | 10 | 12 | 12 |
| Flea and tick preventive (months) | 10 | 12 | 12 |
Monthly preventives are counted in months. Ask your clinic whether the heartworm and tick-borne disease tests can be run together on one blood sample.
Why does the first year cost more?
A puppy packs a lot into twelve months. The core vaccine series alone means about 4 visits between 8 and 17 weeks, each with an exam (see the vaccination schedule generator for your dates). CAPC asks for 4 fecal tests in the first year against 2 for an adult, plus dewormings from 2 weeks old (the puppy deworming schedule dates them). If you plan to spay or neuter, set that line to 1 in the year it's planned, and use the spay and neuter age calculator to see when that might be.
Why do senior dogs cost more at the vet?
AAHA's 2023 senior care guidelines recommend a medical workup once or twice a year for senior dogs, with blood counts, chemistry and urinalysis every 6 to 12 months and blood pressure and a thyroid test every year. The mouth should be checked at every visit, and dental work in older dogs is done under anesthesia. Spotting problems early is the point: AAHA notes that earlier identification of age-related changes may improve both the quality and length of life. The senior dog health checklist tells you when your dog counts as a senior.
How do I find my vet's real prices?
- Ask the clinic for its price list for routine services, or for a written estimate of a year of care.
- Ask which tests can share one blood draw, and whether vaccines and exams are priced together.
- If the clinic sells a wellness plan, compare its yearly price with your total here.
- Keep the "sick visits and the unexpected" line honest. No schedule predicts illness or injury; the pet insurance calculator shows whether insurance or savings suits you better for that part.
Frequently asked questions
How often should a healthy adult dog see the vet?
At least once a year. The Companion Animal Parasite Council recommends a preventive exam every 6 to 12 months, and AAHA's senior care guidelines suggest a full medical workup once or twice a year once a dog is a senior.
Does my dog need vaccines every year?
Some, not all. Under AAHA's guidelines the DAPP combination is given every 3 years after the first adult booster, while leptospirosis and lifestyle vaccines such as Bordetella are yearly. Rabies is every 1 or 3 years, depending on the vaccine and the law where you live.
Can I skip the heartworm test if my dog takes a preventive?
No. The American Heartworm Society says yearly testing is still needed, because one missed or late dose can leave a dog unprotected, and even dogs given every dose can occasionally become infected. The test confirms the prevention is working.
Why doesn't this calculator show average vet prices?
We couldn't find a published, verifiable survey of what each vet service costs, and fees vary a lot between clinics and regions. A made-up average would be worse than none, so the calculator gives you the schedule and lets you add your own clinic's prices.
Is a wellness plan cheaper than paying per visit?
Sometimes. Enter your clinic's individual prices here to get the pay-as-you-go total, then compare it with the yearly cost of the plan. Check what the plan includes, because a plan only saves money on services your dog actually needs.
